Uttarakhand CS opens talks with G D Agrawal; hunger strike completed 42nd day

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar on Thursday held dialogue, through video conferencing, with Prof G D Agrawal (Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand) to persuade the 87-year old activist to break his 42-day hunger strike over issues related to the Ganga river.

Mr Kumar talked with the IIT professor-turned-saint through Skype software and tried to impress up on Prof Agrawal that he should show some more patience in judging the outcome of the ongoing works being done by the Centre under the Namami Gange mission and other projects for riding the holy river of the problem of pollution.

However, the 40-minute video conference proved to be futile as the fasting Swami refused to end his fast until the enactment of special law demanded by him and immediate halting of all ongoing works along the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

The octogenarian has been on indefinite hunger strike in Kankhal-Haridwar since June 22.
