US President Trump again offers mediate in Kashmir issue, says both PM Modi and Imran Khan are fantastic people

US President Donald Trump has once again broached the topic of mediating between India and Pakistan to solve the Kashmir dispute. This time he has said that it is on PM Modi to decide on mediation and he is still open to mediating between Imran Khan and PM Modi.

This comes after India categorically denied that PM Modi ever asked for Trump’s help in solving the Kashmir dispute. India has maintained that Kashmir has always been a bilateral issue with no scope of third party intervention.

Speaking on the mediation offer, Trump said, “It is really up to PM Modi. I met with PM Khan, I got along great. I think they are fantastic people, both Khan and Modi. I would imagine they can get along very well.”

He also added, “If they wanted somebody to intervene on Kashmir issue or to help them and I spoke with Pakistan about that, and I spoke, frankly, to India about it. But that’s been going on, that battle, for a long time.”

Trump has once again said that he spoke to PM Modi on the Kashmir dispute. However, the last time he claimed so during a bilateral meeting with Pakistan PM Imran Khan, India vehemently refuted the claims and said that PM Modi never brought up the Kashmir issue during his brief meeting with Trump at the G20 Summit in Japan.

“Have they accepted the offer or not,” Trump sought a clarification when asked about India’s rejection of his mediation offer.

When asked how would he “want to resolve the Kashmir issue”, Trump said, “If I can, if they wanted me to, I would certainly intervene.”

Last week, in his joint media appearance with Pakistan PM Imran Khan in his Oval Office, Trump stunned India by saying that PM Modi sought his mediation on the Kashmir issue.
