Two militants, believed to be foreigners, were killed in a fierce encounter by security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara on Thursday, official sources said.
During a routine patrolling in the woods at Kralgund Langate in Handwara in Kupwara, the militants attacked security forces with automatic weapons late on Wednesday night. Troops immediately retaliated, ensuing an encounter, they said.
Additional security forces were rushed to the forest area to foil any attempt by the militants to escape.
Later, contact with the militants was again established and in the encounter, two militants, were killed.
The bodies of the duo were recovered on Thursday morning, they said, adding a large cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK rifles, were recovered.
A massive search operation has been launched in and around the woods, as it is believed that some more militants are hiding there.
