Train 18 : India’s First Engine-Less Train to go on trial run today

The first trial run of the country’s engine-less train will be conducted today on the Bareilly-Moradabad section.

“Train 18”, developed by the Integral Coach Factory and seen as a successor to the Shatabdi Express, was unveiled last month by Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani.

The fully air-conditioned train, driven by a self-propulsion module, can run at a speed of up to 160 kmph and comes with technical features for enhanced quick acceleration.

‘Train 18’ – India’s first engine-less semi-speed train to replace Shatabdi Express

A team of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation has reached Moradabad for the trial run. The Rs. 100 crore train is the first long-distance train without a separate locomotive or engine.

The 16-coach semi-high speed ‘trainset’ built at a cost of Rs 100 crore per rake with 80 per cent Indian component has been designed for a maximum operating speed of 160 kmph, officials said.
Train-18 has two driving trailer coaches with aerodynamic driver’s cab (nose cone) on both the ends which will enable quicker turn-around time at destinations. Every alternative coach is motorized, to ensure even distribution of power and faster acceleration/deceleration.
