Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has said Nathuram Godse is the identity of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh known as RSS just like its ‘khaki nikkar’ (khaki shorts).
Azam Khan’s comments came after BJP’s Bhopal candidate Pragya Singh Thakur courted controversy by calling Nathuram Godse a “patriot”.
“Condemnation of Pragya Singh Thakur’s comment by the BJP is not enough. Godse is the identity of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the same way khaki nikkar is. Now, it is in the hands of the people to decide whether they want our nation to be identified with Gandhi or Godse, humanity or khaki nikkar,” Azam Khan said on Thursday.
Criticising the BJP government over giving the ticket to “a supporter of Godse”, Azam Khan said Thakur must be thrown out of the party.
On Thursday, Bhopal BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Thakur had called Nathuram Godse a “deshbhakt”. Sadhvi Pragya was reacting to Kamal Haasan’s recent comment that the first terrorist in India was a Hindu.
Speaking at the election rally, the Makkal Needhi Maiam founder said, “The first terrorist post-Independence was Nathuram Godse, a Hindu. It started from there. He killed Mahatma Gandhi. I am questioning this as the great grandson of Gandhi.”
Soon after her controversial statement on Godse, the Opposition attacked Singh saying what she said reflected the mindset of the people nurtured in the RSS ideology.
Later, Pragya Thakur tendered an apology for her remark stating that she respects Mahatma Gandhi a lot and his sacrifice for the country cannot be forgotten.
