Saudi Arabia bans poultry imports from India over bird flu

Saudi Arabia has temporarily banned imports of live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from India due to a highly pathogenic avian flu, the Saudi agriculture ministry said.

The ban was imposed following a warning issued by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) which reported an outbreak of a highly contagious bird flu virus, Director-General of

the Ministry’s Department of Animal Risk Assessment Dr. Sanad Al-Harbi said, reports the Saudi state-run news agency SPA.

The Paris-based OIE in a report said that H5N8 virus was detected in December among birds in the village of Dasarahalli in Karnataka.
