Russia defeated Spain by 4-3, Putin congratulates Russia

In a tense counter, hosts Russia defeated Spain by 4-3 on penalties after a draw of 1-1 in the World Cup round 16 on Sunday. With this win Russia entered into the quarter-finals, where as the Spain journey ended.

President Vladimir Putin congratulated Russia’s World Cup team for its win over Spain in a phone call to the manager, the Kremlin said on Sunday, as the host country marked the surprise victory with raucous street celebrations.
Putin called Russia manager Stanislav Cherchesov before the game to wish him luck and again after it to congratulate him, he said. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev attended the game, watching with his wife from the stands. He later posted a photograph on social media of himself and Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko celebrating with the team.

Russia entered the soccer World Cup ranked by FIFA as the tournament’s weakest side, but has defied expectations by beating Saudi Arabia and Egypt easily and now reaching the quarter-finals.

Russia forward Artem Dzyuba levelled the score, when he converted a penalty into a goal. Both the teams were  settled at 1-1 at halftime.

It was in the 12th minute when Spain got an early lead through a Russia own goal by Sergey Ignashevich. Russia Sergei Ignashevich is the oldest player ever to score a World Cup own goal.

Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia never beaten Spain. Their last encounter ended 3-3 in a friendly match in November 2017. So, far spain have scored 10 goals in their last three games against Russia.

Russia will face either Croatia or Denmark, who will meet on Sunday, in Sochi on July 7.
