In a tense counter, hosts Russia defeated Spain by 4-3 on penalties after a draw of 1-1 in the World Cup round 16 on Sunday. With this win Russia entered into the quarter-finals, where as the Spain journey ended.
Russia forward Artem Dzyuba levelled the score, when he converted a penalty into a goal. Both the teams were settled at 1-1 at halftime.
It was in the 12th minute when Spain got an early lead through a Russia own goal by Sergey Ignashevich. Russia Sergei Ignashevich is the oldest player ever to score a World Cup own goal.
Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia never beaten Spain. Their last encounter ended 3-3 in a friendly match in November 2017. So, far spain have scored 10 goals in their last three games against Russia.
Russia will face either Croatia or Denmark, who will meet on Sunday, in Sochi on July 7.
