Rajnath likely to visit J&K to review security situation

In a bid to review the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir after suspension of operations against militants, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit Jammu and Kashmir before Id ul Fitr, a top Government source said here on Friday.

“The Home Minister is expected to arrive in J&K for two days on June 6 and he would hold meetings with top officials from the army, paramilitary and intelligence to assess the impact of ceasefire as well as the security concerns over Amarnath Yatra”, the source said.

The proposed visit of Mr Singh will give a fillip to peace and dialogue process in the Valley after the unilateral but conditional suspension of Operations with militants in the state during the holy Ramazan month.

“During his visit the Home Minister would also review the security arrangements for Amarnath Yatra which will begin on June 8,” a source in the Intelligence agency said.

Mr Singh also met J&K Governor N.N Vohra, who was in capital on Friday, and it is assumed that they have discussed the current situation in the valley .
Later in the day, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also met Mr Singh in his office.

Though the MHA senior officials were tightlipped over the outcome of the meeting but they hinted that the meeting held on the prevailing security situation in Kashmir.

“The Home Minister is in favour of extending the ceasefire even after Ramazan as the government is happy with the response that the truce has received on the ground in J&K. The Centre is closely monitoring the situation in the state,” a Ministry official said.

The possibility of extension of the ceasefire is also indicated as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan talked on ‘hotline’ on Tuesday and both vowed to stick to the 2003 ceasefire agreement and agreed to ‘undertake sincere measures to improve the existing situation to ensure peace and avoidance of hardships to the civilians along the borders’.
