In a ‘no holds barred ‘ attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday called the party as ‘arrogant’ and ‘power hungry,’ while likening his party to the ‘pandavas,’ designed to fight for truth, setting stage for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Addressing the Congress workers on the final day of the 84th plenary session of the party, Mr Gandhi, comparing the present political scenario with the battle of Kurukshetra, likened the BJP to ‘power hungry’ and ‘arrogant Kauravas’ and the Congress to the ‘humble Pandavas’, said like the ‘Pandavas,’ his party would fight for the truth and win the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
‘Centuries ago, there was a huge battle on the field of Kurukshetra. The Kauravas were powerful and arrogant. The Pandavas were humble and fought for the truth. Like the Kauravas, the BJP and the RSS are designed to fight for power. Like the Pandavas, Congress will fight for the truth,” Rahul said, amid applause from party workers gathered at the plenary.
In an apparent reference to BJP national President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress President said that while the people would accept a murder accused as president of the BJP and a person drunk with power in that party, they would never accept the same in the Congress.
‘’Congress can never be like BJP. India expects more from the Congress because it holds us to a higher standard than any other party. The people of this country will accept a man accused of murder as BJP president. They will accept a man drunk with power in the BJP, but will never accept the same in the Congress.
Congress party understands deeply that we are for truth. The public will punish us if we do not match up to the standards. India will punish us if we do nothing but make a grab for power This is because BJP is voice of a organisation, while Congress is the voice of the nation,’’ Rahul said.
In this context, he said that in the last years of the previous UPA government, the Congress did not stand up to the expectations of the people which is why they were punished by the people in 2014.
In the last few years of our last government, we did not stand up to the expectations of the people of our country. The people of India felt let down by us,’Rahul said. Coming down heavily on PM Modi on the issue of corruption, Rahul said the name “Modi” actually symbolised the collusion between India’s biggest crony capitalists and the Prime Minister of India.
In a reference to the PNB fraud, Rahul said, “Modi gives Modi 30,000 crores of your money and in turn, Modi gives Modi money for marketing Modi and fighting elections. Even in cricket, the most corrupt name is similar to that of our prime minister. The name Modi symbolises the collusion between India’s biggest crony capitalists and the prime minister of India. T.oday, the corrupt and powerful control the conversation in the country.’
Charging PM Modi of failing to fulfil the promies made to the people at the time of the Lok sabha elections, Rahul said, that people voted for Mr Modi hoping that they would walk along with him on country’s oath towards development. However, he lamented that after coming to power , he had been favouring a few rich people.
”Today, if you are poor, your only choice is to become a farmer or labourer, . You are destined to live in ‘Modi’s maya’ – an imaginary world of ‘acche din’, Swachh Bharat and , Rs 15 lakh in your bank account.
People voted for Mr Modi hoping that they would walk along with him on country’s oath towards development. However, after he came to power, he flavoured a few industrialists like Nirav modi and Jay shah, leaving the poor high and dry,’he said.
Expressing confidence over the Congress winning the 2019 polls, he said that there was a wave across the country against Mr Modi and the BJP which had left the PM worried. ‘The BJP has been losing election after election, and this has “brought about a change in Modi’s face.
The suit is gone. He is thinking that somehow they managed to win Gujarat. And he must be thinking that they will not be able to go through in 2019,” Rahul said. However, Rahul Gandhi appealed to party leaders to avoid infighting, at least until the Lok Sabha polls. “Fight (among yourselves), but after the elections. Please,” he said. He also stressed the need for a change in the Congress organisation.
‘The Congress is The only party that can solve the problems faced by people like lack of jobs. However, for that the organisation needs to change. We have to change the Congress.
At the same time, he stressed the need to break the wall between the Congress workers and the leaders.
‘’The delegates at the back have energy and power to change. But there is a wall between our workers and leaders. The wall that stands between the Congress party leaders and a party workers is seen when someone drops down from a parachute and gets an election ticket while a hardworking party worker is told that no you don’t have the money to get a party ticket. Some of you sitting here might not like what I am saying. My first job is to break this wall,,’he said. He said the outcome of giving power to the workers was seen in the Gujarat elections.
‘To every youngster in India, I would like to say that we are your instrument. The Congress party belongs to you. We want to open our doors to your talent, your bravery and your energy. This country is struggling and it needs you,’’he said.
Attacking the Modi Government on the issue of lack of jobs, farmers distress and the bank scams in the country, he charged the Government and Prime Minister Modi of maintaining a silence on these problems and instead trying to divert attention of the people from them.
‘’The government always says that India is the fastest growing economy in the world. But today millions of youth face unemployment. People have no jobs. Farmer are committing suicide, but Modiji says “chalo yoga karte hain”. PM diverts our attention and jumps from one event to another from Gabbar Singh tax to yoga in Parliament, but never talks about the issues,’’Rahul said.
Mr Gandhi said that various sections of society like farmers, minorities and tribals are disillusioned with Mr Modi and living in a state of fear. ‘’They tell tribal, the jungle is not yours, tell farmers to work for nothing, They tell Tamils to change language. They tell Muslims of India who never went to Pakistan and supported this great nation that you don’t belong here. They tell the Tamils to change your beautiful language, they tell people of north-east we don’t like what you eat, tell women to dress properly.
They told Gauri Lankesh and Kalburgi that if you question us, you will die. They tell our honest businessman to shut up and allow corrupt officers to extort their hard earned money,’Rahul said
Rahul charged the BJP and the RSS of trying to undermine institutions, including the judiciary, Parliament and police. “People of India go to the courts for justice. For the first time, four judges of the Supreme Court had to come to the people for justice,” he said.
.Laying out the Congress vision for the country, Rahul said. that if the Congress comes to power at the Centre , it would create food parks that would ensure suitable price to farmers for their produce as also provide farm loan waiver and interest-free loans to farmers.
He also said that the COngress would encourage small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with banking loans and provide technological help for job generation. In the education sector, he said the congress would set up institute’s of the standards of I ITs and IIMs across the country,.
‘The world currently has two visions – the American vision, and the Chinese vision. We want to see the world in the next 10-year talk about the middle path of the Indian vision – a vision of “brotherhood, non-violence and love”,’Rahul said.
In a potshot at the RSS for their non participation in the freedom struggle, Rahul said, ’’the people of the country will never forget that when Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi , as the leader of the Congress, spent 15 years in a British jail, the RSS leader leader Savarkar was writing a letter begging the British for mercy. On the other hand, every single state of the country has a list of people, who shed their blood for the country.’’
