Rahul alleges govt hand behind Nirav Modi’s escape

Taking a jibe at the Narendra Modi government on the escape of 47-year-old billionaire Nirav Modi, the person at the centre of the Rs 11,300 crore alleged fraud at Punjab National Bank, Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleged on Friday that the NDA government was behind the absconding jeweller and his business associate Mehul Choksi.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Mr Gandhi said, ‘The scamster’s escape formula:
Na(Mo)
La(Mo) + Ni(Mo) —– Bha(Go)’

By the time, Punjab National Bank, India’s second biggest government bank, had fully realised the scale of fraud by its officials to help Nirav Modi get credit from banks overseas without furnishing proper guarantees, the jeweller, his family and Choksi had already left the country.

Nirav Modi took a flight out of the country on January 1 with his brother who is a Belgian citizen. Nirav Modi’s wife Ami, a US citizen, flew out on January 6 while uncle and associate Mehul Choksi left on January 4.

Both Nirav Modi and Choksi, diamond merchants and high-profile jewellers, have been accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation of defrauding the PNB under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA).

Congress has alleged on Thursday that Nirav Modi was allowed to flee the country like fallen IPL czar Lalit Modi. Meanwhile, the government has suspended passports of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi for a month.
