Modi government redrew the map of Jammu and Kashmir in a historic move on Monday and stripped the state of its special status by scrapping Article 370. The govt has also moved to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories – Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. NSA Ajit Doval is in Kashmir to review the ground situation and has said that locals are happy with the move. Before making the big announcement, Centre had rushed an additional 38,000 troops to the Valley and another batch of 8,000 personnel was sent on Monday after the announcement.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik reviewed the security situation and emphasised the need for constant alertness and preparedness to deal with any eventuality. Top political leaders of Kashmir such as Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and others were arrested on Monday night. Internet and phone lines continue to remain suspended in Jammu and Kashmir as tension simmers in the Valley after the scrapping of Article 370 that gave special status to the state.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who is reviewing the ground situation in Kashmir, has sent a report to the Home Ministry after reviewing the situation. Doval has said in his report that the Centre’s decision to revoke Article 370 has been widely welcomed by the locals of Jammu and Kashmir. Doval has also said, “There is peace and normalcy in J&K and it had been event free. No agitation. People also moving about for essential work.”
Locals of J&K are supportive and feel the change was well planned. They feel sufficiently reassured by statements and actions of Centre. They are feeling that local politicians had vested interests and took people for a ride.
