Krunal Pandya and Mayank Markande took two wickets each as Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 102 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 crucial encounter at Eden Gardens here tonight.
Chasing 210, KKR were all out for 108, their lowest total at the Eden Gardens as Mumbai completed their second-largest victory (by runs) in IPL history. KKR kept losing wickets at regular intervals and Chris Lynn and Nitish Rana were the only batsmen with 20-plus scores.
KKR start went from bad to worst as Chris Lynn was soon run out. Robin Uthappa too fell even before the team could touch the 50-run mark and the team was on backfoot. Wickets fell at regular intervals and after captain Dinesh Karthik’s wicket, Kolkata was on the verge of another defeat.
It was the third year in a row that Mumbai completed the league-double over KKR, but more importantly, the win propelled Mumbai to the top-half of the points table for the first time this season. KKR, on the other hand, dropped to fifth. Earlier, Mumbai rode on the back of Ishan Kishan’s blazing half-century before their
bowlers applied an age-old tactic of bowling short to KKR and slowly dismembered their opponent’s batting line-up.
Mumbai emerged victorious by handing Kolkata Knight Riders an embarrassing defeat at their home with a stellar performance in all three departments–batting, bowling and fielding.
Recovering from a slow start, defending champions MI recorded back-to-back wins against Kings XI Punjab and KKR to jump to fifth spot (8 points from 10 games) in the table. KKR, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold, winning five and losing as many matches.
While the Dinesh Karthik-led team have not managed to string together consistent performances, the Rohit Sharma-led MI led have looked like a team on a mission to turn the tide in their favour at the end of the season.
Kolkata Knight Riders are back home at Eden Gardens but they need a change of fortunes. In the space of four days, the two teams are facing each other for the second time.
KKR lost to Mumbai Indians in their previous game and now face a big task of keeping themselves in the top four in the points table. Mumbai Indians have suddenly risen in the tables with consecutive wins.
They defeated KKR in their previous game and before that, they won against Kings XI. In a typical MI type campaign, they began on a horrific note, losing four consecutive matches but are back in playoff contention with four wins out of 10 games.
