Launching a scathing attack on the NDA Government at the Centre for its ‘misgovernance’ over the last four years and its ‘failure’ to fulfill promises made to people during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Saturday said that the ‘jodi’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah is harmful for the country.
Addressing a joint press conference with senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala and All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev, AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot said during the last four years, the Modi government had betrayed the faith that various sections of society had put in Mr Narendra Modi and the BJP by giving them a huge majority in the Lok Sabha.
‘The BJP led Government at the Centre has betrayed the faith that the people vested in the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Every section of society, be it the youth, women, farmers, dalits, tribals, traders as well as the minorities feel a sense of betrayal. For, over the past four years, the Modi Government has failed to fulfill the promises that it has made to people in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections be it on providing 2 crore jobs to the youth. 150 per cent MSP to farmers, bringing back Black money, ensuring security for women in the country and removing corruption.,’ Mr Gehlot said.
Mr Gehlot said that the Congress was observing the fourth anniversary of this government as ‘Vishwasghat diwas’ to highlight the Government’s betrayal of the faith of people.
‘As part of the ‘vishwasghat diwas’ (betratal day), the Congress leaders across the country will hold press conferences and organise dharnas and protest the failures of this government. On this occasion, we are also releasing a booklet ‘India Betrayed in four years of BJP misrule’. The booklet highlights the failure of this government in all areas through figures,’Mr Gehlot said.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad lambasted the Modi Government on the issue of national security, assault on freedom of expression , the destruction of the economy, fall in exports , a sharp increase in cross border attacks from Pakistan and the various corruption scams during the Modi regime including the Vyapam scam, the alleged irregulaities in the deal for rafale fighter jets, the PNB scam, the PDS scam and the SSC exam leak scam.
Pointing out that Mr Modi had sought votes during the 2014 Lok Sabha elecitons on the issue of National security, Mr Azad said, ‘National security is an area on which Mr Modi focused a lot during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He exploited National security issue to the hilt during the Lok Sabha polls and got a lot of votes in the elections on the issue.
However, the National security situation in the country today has worsened since this government came to power at the Centre . Ever since this government came to power at the Centre, there has been deterioration in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. In the recent history of the valley, ever since the situation there normalised in 1996, the highest number of armymen and security forces have been killed during the four years of the NDA Government. During this period, the highest number of civilians have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir . Also never before in the history of the country have so many defence establishments been attacked, from the Pathankot air base to the Pampore attack.’
Attacking the Government’s foreign policy, Mr Azad criticised the PM’s visits to China, Pakistan and other neighbouring countries which, he said, were without any agenda. ‘During his recent visit to China, the PM failed to raise the issue of the Doklam standoff. Also, he has been undertaking visits to Pakistan to attend marriage functions,’Mr Azad said.
Expressing concern over the ‘worsening’ of the social security situation in the country during the four years of the Government, Mr Azad said,’the atmosphere in society has been vitiated. There is an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty all over the country. Dalits and tribals are being oppressed while women are being molested. Incidents of rape have sharply increased under the rule of the BJP which talks about ‘Beti bachao’.’
Mr Gehlot said that in the four years of the Government, farmers did not receive the minimum support price for their produce.
Describing the Modi Government as a ‘jumla sarkar’, Mr Gehlot said,’the rule of the BJP government has witnessed ‘a jumla a day’. Earlier, the Government made a lot of noise about Yoga.
The BJP talked of bringing back Black Money from abroad but during their rule it is the ‘white money’ of the common man that has been stashed away abroad by Nirav Modi, and Lalit Modi.’
Talking about the various corruption scandals during the rule of the BJP, Mr Gehlot said,’there was a huge mining scam in Rajasthan wherein the mines were auctioned without following any proper procedure. Charges are being levelled against the relatives of the chief minister in this regard.
In Madhya Pradesh, the names of several ministers have been linked to the Vyapam scam. In Chhattisgarh, there has been a PDS scam on the sale of rice through PDS. In all, the BJP led Government’s several scams have come to light.’
Attacking PM Modi on the ‘poor’ economic situation in the country, Mr Azad said,’in the four years of the Narendra Modi Government, the economic situation in the country has worsened. Even according to the new system of GDP calculations, India’s GDP is the lowest in four years. The trade is lowest in three years.
Also, exports have declined from Rs 19.7 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs 10.73 crore in 2017-18. During the elections, Mr Modi had promised to bring down the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG but the prices of these products have risen sharply. This has had a cascading impact on the prices of other essential commodities.’
Speaking on the occasion, All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev attacked the Modi Government for its ‘failure’ to fulfill its promise to ensure security of women in the country.
‘Despite their slogan of ‘Beti bachao’, the Modi Government has failed to ensure security of women in the country,’she said.
She also charged Mr Modi of ‘failing’ to bring the women’s reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha.
