Modi Government has messed up the economy: Manmohan Singh

In a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said that the present government has messed up the nation’s economy.

Addressing the 84th plenary session of the Congress, former PM, termed the promise of 2 crore jobs per year made by Mr Modi during the Lok Sabha elections as a ‘jumla’.
‘The BJP led government has messed up the economy,’ Dr Singh said.

‘When Modi ji was campaigning he made lots of tall promises. These promises have proved to be ‘jumlas’. He (Modi) said we will provide 2 crore jobs. We have not seen even 2 lakh jobs,’ he said.

Criticising the policies of demonetisation and the faulty implementation of the goods and services tax by the present government, he said,’Demonetisation and faulty implementation of the GST have destroyed the small and medium sectors of the industry.’

He said that the Economic survey for 2018-19 had been unclear on the exact growth in the sectors of education, employment and agriculture. Dr Singh said that the agricultural growth in the country had stagnated in the last four years and termed the NDA government’s promise of doubling farmers income by 2022 as a ‘jumla’.

‘To double the farmers income by 2022, the country needs to growth by 12 per cent per annum which us unthinkable in the present situation,’ he said. He said that India stands at a cross road.

‘Today we have opportunities as well as challenges. We have to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities,’ Dr Singh said and hoped that the Congress party would provide a pathway for the future of the country.
