President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday called for ensuring women’s contribution in the development of Indian economy, saying the issue of women empowerment
is not related to politics or religion.
Speaking after honoring the women and institutions who contributed significantly to women empowerment in Rashtrapati Bhavan on International Women’s Day, he said the development of Indian economy without having equal participation of half the population was ‘not possible’.
Women, he said, had demonstrated their abilities in modern times. Congratulating the people on International Women’s Day, he emphasised the empowerment of women and said daughters should hear the call and they have to give rights. The issue of women empowerment was not related to religion and politics. ‘The duty of every citizen is to try to overcome this inequality within the society. To overcome this similarity, emphasise education and awareness,’ he told the gathering.
Mr Kovind had a message for men, especially boys, saying they have to be sensitive in respect of women. This should be started from home and family. The President said women had shown their abilities in all areas but on the basis of traditions and customs boys and girls were being discriminated. The overall development of society could not be done by discriminating between boys and girls. He said it was necessary to end this discrimination for the overall development of society. For this, the traditions and customs that lead to gender inequality should be ended.
