Ngidi’s 4/10 and Raina’s unbeaten 61 helped Chennai Super Kings beat Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets eliminating them out of playoffs in the last league encounter of the 11th edition of the IPL here at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday paving the way for the Rajasthan Royals becoming the fourth and the final team to qualify for the playoffs.
Chasing a score of 153 set by Kings XI, CSK skipper M S Dhoni finished the game after hitting six in the last over of the first ball of Mohit Sharma’s ball.
Suresh Raina’s remained unbeaten brilliant half century guided team towards victory.
Raina scored quickfire 61 off 48 hit 4 fours and 2 sixes.
With the defeat, Punjab’s hopes of qualifying for a playoff berth was dashed. Chasing 154, Chennai didn’t get the start they’ve wanted as Ambati Rayudu departed for 3 runs in the second over off Mohit Sharma’s delivery.
Faf du Plessis (14) didn’t get many runs while Sam Billings (0) and Harbhajan Singh (19) also faltered in the run chase.
However, it was Raina (61) and Deepak Chahar who controlled the Chennai innings in the middle overs. Chahar was dismissed by KXIP captain R Ashwin for 39 runs.
Dhoni (16) remained unbeaten in the end and supported Raina ensuring Chennai crossed the finishing line.
For Punjab Ankit Rajpoot (2/19) was again his best bowling spell which went in vain. Ashwin too took two wickets while Sharma one wicket.
