Election Commission of India on Wednesday supported the plea that one candidate should contest from only one constituency.
The EC stance was spelt out in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court.
It backed the Public Interest Litigation filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Upadhyay.
In its affidavit, the EC said, nobody should be allowed to contest from more than one seat or one constituency.
The matter would now come up for hearing in July first week before a bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.
Mr Upadhyay had moved the apex court seeking a direction and an order from it that no candidate should contest simultaneously from two constituencies.
