CRPF in violence-hit Darjeeling till March 8 : Supreme Court

Against the backdrop of Gorkhaland Janmukti Morcha mayhem, the Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside a Calcutta High Court order ordering deployment of additional CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel in Darjeeling and Kalimpong areas.

Four companies will be deployed till March 8, the apex court ruled.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.

West Bengal government had earlier obtained a stay on the Centre’s decision from the Calcutta High Court to withdraw forces from the violence-hit regions. The Centre had subsequently moved the apex court.

The Supreme Court allowed withdrawal of remaining four companies of CRPF by March 8 as against the WB government’s demand for retaining forces for another 4 weeks.
