BJP misleading people on SC/ST Act: Congress

Charging the Narendra Modi government with misleading people on the SC/ST Act, the Congress on Monday said that while on one hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised that no dilution would be allowed in the Act, on the other hand state governments ruled by the BJP were now implementing the diluted Act.

The party called on the Government to bring an ordinance to restore the status quo on the Act. Talking to reporters here, senior Congress leader and former chairman of the SC/ST Commisison P L Punia said, ‘the BJP is misleading people on the SC/ST Act. After PM Modi’s promise of not diluting the Act and saying that it had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court, the BJP Government in Chhattisgarh has gone ahead and started the implementation of the diluted version of the Act and also promised disciplinary action against those who do not implement the diluted version of the SC-ST Act.

This is a clear case of the BJP’s unabashed double-speak duplicity and deceit. In a circular circulated by the Additional DG, CID of Chhattisgarh, the Chhattisgarh police has been directed to implement the diluted version of the SC/ST Act which busts the blatant lie of the Prime Minister and his Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad that there would not be any weakening of the SC/ST Act.’

He said if the Government was serious on its resolve not to allow the dilution of the Act, it should have acted on the plea of the Opposition to take legislative steps to restore the status quo in the Act.

Mr Punia said the ‘anti-dalit’ stance of the NDA government was evident from several BJP dalit MPs themselves having stated that the Government was doing nothing for the dalit section of society.

Five dalit BJP Members of Parliament have expressed unhappiness and openly voiced their dissent by showing the ‘mirror of truth’ to PM Modi, thereby puncturing the tall claims of sheer tokenism that PM had latched on to.

Mr Udit Raj from Delhi, Ms Savitri Bai Phule from Bahraich, Chhote Lal Kharwar from Robertsganj, Ashok Kumar Dohre from Etawah and Yashwant Singh from Nagina have written letters and expressed dismay and anguish on the absolute ill-treatment to the SC-ST community and have spoken the truth that “in past four years the Modi government had done nothing for these sections,’ Mr Punia said.
