Bird injuries figures from Karuna Abhiyan of the state government revealed that in all 1500 injuries were reported on January 15 while 900 such cases were reported on January 14. The figures are for all 10 talukas of Ahmedabad district including Ahmedabad city.
It should be noted that last year in all around 1800 cases of bird injuries were reported. This year the number of injuries saw an almost 33% rise in injuries.
An official who has worked with organisations that help rescue injured birds said that despite the ban, Chinese manja continues to be used. “This is why casualty figures are so high. Another reason could be over the years the efforts to save birds have improved and so organisations are able to reach more injured birds,” said the official.
It should be noted that across the state, 244 medical centers run by NGOs, 46 animal ambulances, 500 v veterinary doctors and 781 clinics were set up under the government’s’ Karuna Abhiyan programme. Over 270 NGOs had also joined hands with the forest department for the initiative.
