East Godavari Collector Kartikeya Mishra on Friday said that an action plan was formulated to protect the Olive ridley turtles which are endangered due to indiscriminate poaching by the fishermen all over.
He told media persons here after visiting the Hope Island where the Olive ridley turtles rest and lay eggs , that these turtles would be visiting the area during this season for resting and needed to be conserved.
“As these turtles during their journey to the island were getting entangled in the fishing nets and the fishermen were selling them to the traders they are becoming extinct.
As such the forest department has been creating awareness among the fishermen community to install the turtle excluder devices (TEDs) in fishing nets so that these turtles can escape from the nets.
Instructions were given to the concerned department officials to go for installation of the TEDs in fishing nets and also take steps to prevent poaching by greedy people”, he added.
