India Open Boxing: Sangwan, Sarjubala confident of medals; Thapa enters quarters

Sumit Sangwan winner of silver medallist at Asian games (91kg) and Sarjubala Devi (51kg) silver medallist at World championship were among the four Indian boxers confident of fetching medals after winning in the inaugural India Open tournament for men and women on Monday.
Second seed Sumit won against Jordan’s Virender Kumar 5-0, while Sarjubala Devi (51kg) and Pinki Jangra (51kg) moved to the semis in the women’s competition.

Naman Tanwar (91kg) thrashed Jordan’s Eishaish Hussein to enter the semi-finals heading towards medal.

Shiva Thapa, (60kg), three-time Asian medallist defeated Bhutan’s Dorji Wangdi in the opener entering quarter-finals. Shiva will next bout against Uzbekistan’s Sherbek Rakhmatulloev. 

Ruling national champion Manish Kaushik (60kg) beat defeat Cuba’s Rabi Armando Martinez. 

Among the men, Amit Phangal has entered last-eight stage without having to fight after his rival Ramish Rahmani of Afghanistan gave him a walkover. 

Amit next faces Cameroon’s Fotsala Simplice, who defeated Malaysian Mohammad Fuad Bin Redzuan. K Shyam Kumar (49kg) also moved to the quarters beating compatriot Neeraj Swami. 

In a close fought match Sachin Siwach (49kg), was beaten by Thailand’s Thani Narinram.
