Bats not behind spread of NiV in Kerala: Lab reports

Bats were not responsible for spreading deadly Nipah Virus (NiV) that claimed 12 lives in northern Kerala districts of Kozhikode and Malappuram, a laboratory report has said.

Presence of NiV was not found from samples collected from bats taken from Changaroth village in Kozhikode which accounted for the first victim, lab report from Bhopal said.

ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal in its test results of samples screened said ”all samples were negative for Nipah Virus genome.”
Bats were suspected to be the cause of the disease in Kerala as it spread NiV at all places it has been reported earlier.
