At least 36 people were killed when and several injured when a packed bus of more than 60 passengers dashed against the railing of a bridge and plunged into a canal at Daulatabad, about 220 km from Kolkata, in Murshidabad district this morning.
The bus, belonging to NBSTC, has been pulled out of water with the help of two crane. The ill-fated bus was en route to Malda from Karimpur in Nadia when the accident occurred, police said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today cut off all her official programmes and reached the accident site.
She was personally overseeing in Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. Ms Banerjee also announced Rs five lakh compensation for victims and one lakh for seriously injured passengers and Rs 50,000 for injured passengers. According to Hospital sources, at least 36 bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the toll might rise.
